Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October this year. That leaves a few days.
The best reality costumes need one prop everybody knows, not a full outfit. A cloak. A rose. A water bottle with a name on it. Get the prop right and the rest can come from your wardrobe.

1. The Traitors: the hooded cloak
The easiest costume of the season, and the most topical. The Celebrity Traitors series 2 is on BBC One right now. Every week the Traitors meet in hooded cloaks to choose who gets murdered.
Go full Traitor: a long black cloak with the hood up, dark knitwear and boots that can handle a muddy Highland mission. Add a tartan scarf for the castle look.
Couples’ version: two cloaks. In January Stephen Libby and Rachel Duffy became the first pair of Traitors to win the UK show, so a matching pair of cloaks has a real winning story behind it (BBC News).
Party trick: hold your own Round Table. At midnight everyone votes, and the “banished” guest has to say whether they’re a Faithful or a Traitor.

2. Love Island: the recoupling
Swimwear, a fake tan and a very confident walk. That’s the solo version.
The couples’ version is better. Go as a recoupling: one of you in villa swimwear, the other in a smart summer outfit, and both carrying a personalised water bottle with your names on it. Islanders’ named bottles are part of the show’s look, and a marker pen will do the job.
For a group, split into couples and stage a recoupling at the party. Everyone needs a “my type on paper” line ready.
It’s late October, so bring a coat for the walk there.

3. Survivor: buff, torch, tribe colours
Survivor costumes are cheap and comfortable. Pick a tribe colour and wear the buff, the tube of fabric the show hands out in tribe colours, as a headband, a bandana or round your neck.
Add cargo shorts, a slightly wrecked shirt and a torch. Bring an LED one, not a real flame. At Tribal Council, a snuffed torch means you’re out of the game.
Group idea: put each friend in a different tribe colour and vote someone out before the cake.

4. Love Is Blind: the pods
A couples’ costume with a built-in gag. In the pods, couples talk through a wall and get engaged before they’ve seen each other.
Make a “wall” out of a large piece of cardboard and tape it between you. Each of you holds one of the show’s famous gold wine glasses. The second costume piece is the ring: one big, sparkly, obviously fake engagement ring, to be revealed at the reveal.

5. Real Housewives: reunion glam
Housewives reunions mean gowns, so dress for the reunion couch. Sequins, big hair, a tagline ready, and a glass in your hand (an unbreakable one, for safety).
For a deep-cut costume, borrow the most famous move in the franchise: Teresa Giudice flipping a table at dinner in the season 1 finale of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Please only mime the flip.
Group idea: each friend picks a city and writes a one-line tagline for the opening credits.

6. The Great British Bake Off: the tent
Very cosy, and the most British costume on this list. Wear an apron over a cardigan, add oven gloves and a dusting of flour, and you’re in the tent.
For extra points, carry a homemade bake and make everyone guess whether it gets a Hollywood handshake. Hang some bunting at home and the house becomes the tent too.

7. Dancing with the Stars: the Mirrorball
It’s all sequins. One of you is the celebrity, the other is the pro. Wear sequins and dance shoes, and hold a scorecard so you can rate other people’s costumes all night.
The winning prop is the Mirrorball Trophy. A disco ball on a stand gets you most of the way there.

8. Clarkson’s Farm: Diddly Squat chic
The easiest costume in this guide: a flat cap, wellies and a wax jacket or a gilet. Carry a clipboard and complain about the weather.
The deep cut is the Lamborghini tractor Jeremy Clarkson bought for the farm in season 1. A toy one in your pocket is enough for fans to get it.

9. The Bachelor: the final rose
Black tie and a rose. That’s all you need, and it works whether you go as the lead or a contestant.
For a couples’ costume, one of you wears the suit and the other the gown, and you pass a single red rose between you all night. Hand out roses to the guests you’re keeping.

10. Hell’s Kitchen: red team vs blue team
Put on a white chef jacket, then pick a side. Hell’s Kitchen splits its chefs into a red team and a blue team, so a red or blue bandana or apron shows which kitchen you’re in.
The group version works well. Split the party into two teams and run a “dinner service” at the snack table.
